One

Emma turned one today.  We started the day with a cute pair of piggies, a birthday t-shirt and a present.
Noah helped sister with the unwrapping.

A new baby doll, and she loves it!

"Bay-bee"

Walking off with her new baby.

Yummy birthday breakfast of champions.  Milk, yogurt, strawberries, and cinnamon toast.

Time for some robot play with brother.  Emma was almost atop the table before Daddy wrangled her back to her chair.

Next, I filled the baby pool for the kids to play in the backyard.  June birthdays are perfect for some splashing fun. Translation: If you want to go outside in the Texas heat, water is a definite requirement.

She had so much fun splashing in the backyard with her brother.  And, it was HOT, but she loved every minute of it.

I gave her a ride on the backyard roller coaster.  She loved it and kept crawling back to the top for more.  She would sit on the ramp and scoot her boot to try to get down.  Momma had to help her out with getting the car to the top.  My little daredevil.

After the roller coaster, Emma walked over to the swings and pointed up.  Excellent communication little girl.

Break time with PaPa.

Time for cake.  Brother helps out with the candle.

But, that birthday cake is all for Emma.  Yummy!

The Birthday Boys

I'm not even going to go into the whole birthday venue thing.  Same place. Same time.  It just totally works for us.  Even three years later.  You know what else works.  These boys!  Three years in a row.  I love this...

Um... Zack, is that the same shirt from last year?  More birthday party blogging to come... It was a BLAST!

Five - Part Two

Between party prep and end of school craziness, I somehow completely procrastinated getting you a gift. Actually, I lie. Your gift is the massive play structure in our backyard. But, that didn't arrive on your birthday or all wrapped up, so late night shopping commenced. I picked up a few things that I knew you would like... a Captain America figure and book because you're a slave to marketing just like your mother, a space shuttle Lego set keeping with the theme of your rocketship birthday party. But I know the thing you'll love the most is the set of Mr. Men, Little Miss kid's meal toys that I bought on a random trip through the Arby's drive-thru for a Diet Coke. Only after telling the lady that "No, a Diet Pepsi would not be ok," did I notice the kid's meal came with Mr. Men. Your latest favorite thing. Score.  Wow! I digress.

So, I decided to go with five presents for birthday number 5. Probably not I good precedence to start, but it's a big year. I wrapped them all up, cut numbers out with my Cricut and labeled each gift. When you came into our bed on the morning of your birthday, I said, "Did you see your presents on the table?" "Yes," you replied. "I want to open number 5." I love that you notice all my little details.

You were so excited!

And, as expected, you loved all the Mr. Men, Little Miss toys.

Next up, a little birthday baking. Chocolate cupcakes with chocolate icing.  After baking and singing, you headed to your room and dressed for the day all by yourself.  You did a pretty cute job too!

Then, we took Emma to the doctor for an ear check. "Not Noah, just Emma," you said.

Then, we called up our friends to meet us for lunch and play at a local Mexican restaurant.  Thanks Sara and Ryan for meeting us for some birthday play!

Emma is loving all  these new food experiences, although by the end she really wanted to play with the big kids.

Next up, swimming lessons with Mr. B. You are doing so great with swimming! I watched you slide down the big slide into the deep end and swim half the pool length to your instructor. Awesome!

And then it was time for a haircut. You were overdo, and you needed to look fresh for the party. You are still not a fan of the clippers.

We did have one low part of our day when you smeared an entire tub of purple Hello Kitty lip gloss all over my bedspread.  Dude... seriously!  After a slight meltdown by both Momma and you, some stain treatment with Shout! and Oxi Clean, and three washes through the bulky bedding cycle, the spread was gloss free and you were so over your fourth frowny face.  "You only have four frowny faces, not five."  you informed me.  Let the birthday festivities continue.

And to end our day on a high note, Daddy arrived home super early in time for some Lego construction.  Happy "five days old" sweet Noah.

Five - Part One

Daddy took the day off of work Thursday to come with me to Noah's annual appointment to the developmental pediatrician.  Since we were already near downtown, I decided we'd take Noah for a birthday lunch at the aquarium. When I mentioned it to him, he was really excited.  He started talking about fish and then he said, "We're not going to the zoo. Just the aquarium." Could he possibly be referring to birthday number 3? Wow!

Noah was super excited when we finally arrived.  The aquarium is not very big, so we ran through in about 10 minutes.  Or should I say, Noah ran and we followed. That was plenty enough time to see jellyfish, the stingrays and the white tigers.

Stingrays.  Check.

Noah was not interested in tigers much. A little too scary. He couldn't even be talked into a photo-op. Daddy didn't really help matters either.

We then took a ride on the shark train and played a few arcade games.  All aboard.

Noah was a bit scared of the shark train, so was a bit subdued for the ball toss game and hurricane wind tunnel.

Braving the hurricane force winds with Daddy.

That afternoon, back at home, I was laying with Emma in Noah's bed. He came up and said, "Hey Emma, what'd you do today? I knocked down three green seahorses with a baseball." No one can ever say he doesn't pay attention.  He ended up winning a hog and a fish.

Noah's favorite part of the day was actually the aquarium restaurant. It was pretty empty, so no one seemed to mind Noah running up and down the aquarium wall watching all the fish.  "Daddy, what kind of fish is that?" asked Noah. "I don't know, buddy," replies Daddy. "It's a GREAT, BIG FISH!" Noah says.

And the big finish. Molten chocolate cake and the happy birthday song. What a great afternoon!

First Haircut for Emma

Emma almost made it to age one before she got her first trim.  Noah was in desperate need, and I decided to just let Emma get a quick snip too.  That one scraggly tail growing down the back needed to be chopped in the worst way.  She did great, but I know that the first one is always the easist.  Great job, Emma!

Are you sure you want to do this Momma?

Snip. Snip.

Sitting still for her trim.

I didn't get a final picture because the stylist quickly put it up in piggies, but it's cute and cleaned up.

Happy 5th Birthday Noah!

The Tuesday before you were born I went to the doctor. I was a bit over 38 weeks, and you were showing no signs of wanting to be born. Undeterred, my ob scheduled an induction for the next day. My last ultrasound had you measuring rather large, and they thought it was a good idea to get you out. I left with instructions to call the hospital that night to check if there was availability and try get in the next day. That would put me going into the hospital on May 30, so in that case you'd be a May baby. Your due date was June 9 (coincidentally Emma's birthday). It turns out that there were no rooms that night, so we didn't check in to the hospital until May 31 and well, I guess you were destined to be born in June.  So, finally you were born after a long and painful labor.  And, well, that was five years ago.  And, that was the day my life changed forever in the best possible way.

Happy 5th birthday to my sweet, not so baby boy.
What can I say about year number five?  I guess the biggest change was adding a baby to the family.  You did amazingly well, and it was as though overnight you became this big boy.  Emma transitioned pretty seamlessly into our lives, and you are so tolerable and accepting of her being around.  You are hardly ever jealous, and just yesterday during our aquarium trip, you told us that you were going to give your stuffed fish from the arcade to Emma.  I think your exact words were, “this one is for Noah, and this one (holding up the stripey fish) is for Emma.”  Melt. My. Heart.  Emma, of course, absolutely adores you, and although you don’t really say it, I think it makes you pretty proud.  Bathtime has always been a struggling point with you, but lately I have been asking if you would take a bath with Emma because she loves taking baths with you, and you seem to come readily and happily along.  You are such a good big brother, and Emma is so lucky to have you.
You have progressed so well in school and therapy this year.  Your OT, Mer, even told me recently that she has seen very few children progress as much and as quickly as you have.  You are such a hard worker at school, and you have so much (so very much) enthusiasm for all that you do.  You excelled in academics (not a surprise), and you can write your entire alphabet and all your numbers 0-9.  You also learned to draw shapes and create a stick figure.  Writing is not always your favorite activity, but letters have always been very motivating for you, so there are times when you are really into it.
You love books, and your room is starting to look like a mini library.  Right now, you are loving Tiki Tiki Tembo., Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus.  Leonardo the Terrible Monster, and Pete the Cat.  You are starting to sound out words and can guess pretty well from memorization.  You still have a battery that never dies, but you have really improved this year on body awareness and taking responsibility for keeping your hands to yourself and having a quiet body.  It is a work in progress, but you don’t give up.  You are such a happy child and only have the occasional burst of temper.  Sticker charts are in full effect at home, with six stickers resulting in a new box of legos or a trip to the ice cream house and six frowny faces can mean no books before bed or no tv.  You are so funny with those frowny faces.  You unfortunately got one last week for something, I can’t remember, and it was frowny face number two.  You said, “You only have two frowny faces.  Not three.”  I think they might be starting to lose their effectiveness.
You talk nonstop about whatever is going on inside your head.  I have to remind you often to have a quiet mouth and to listen and answer.  Again, it is a work in progress.  You memorize anything and everything that catches your attention.  I’m usually pretty careful about what you listen, read or watch, but for some reason you’ve recently picked up a “stupid, stupid, stupid” chant.  I’m hoping it loses your interest soon, because Momma prefers sweet words to come out of your mouth.  Recently, you have picked up some language from a Sesame Street IPhone App.  It’s basically a book that you follow along.  There is a lot of dialogue followed by “said Elmo,” or “cried Prairie Dawn.”  Just today you told me, “ ‘Sure you can have some chocolate milk,’ said Momma.”  I always comment to Daddy, oh the things that are going on inside that little brain of yours.
You are continuing to grow, and I am so relieved winter is over because you can finally wear bottoms that aren’t required to go down to your feet.  Speaking of clothes, you love getting “dressed for the day,” and you do a pretty good job of picking out your own stuff.  This summer you are preferring the longer shorts that hang past your knees, which I think is so funny!  At least it give me an excuse to buy you new duds.
Overall, I think your year has been awesome, and you just get better and better!  Here's your photo recap.
